Wearing the Maroon and Gold

Hubby and I are Virginians – him by birth, a good chunk of his childhood and 20 years living there more or less (except for his times on the GBGB) courtesy of the United States Navy and I for 16 as his wife. Our son came home to Virginia. While we’re now ‘transplanted’ Pennsylvanians, in our hearts we’re always going to be from the Old Dominion.

As with most Virginians, we have many friends who either are going, have gone or will go to Tech. We’re Hokie fans (when we’re not rooting for U of Az), and our son has always been properly outfitted as such since the day he came home thanks to Aunt Amy and Uncle Jack.

So Monday was an awful day for us. We grieve in a personal way for our state, our school and our children lost, wounded and damaged by this.  The hours between the news break and all the student check-ins frankly felt like 9/11 all over, when my sister was in Manhattan, I could not reach her for 4 hours (she ended up calling me!) and I had no idea how close she was to the Towers.   Those were four of the seven longest hours of my life, the last 3 being those waiting to hear of our Tech “kids” – dear friends’ children whom we’ve watched grow up.

So today we proudly wear our maroon and gold, with a tear, yes, but strong shoulders and a proud stance.  No black around the maroon and gold, we stand in the white.
